# How Much Fat Should You Eat During Weight Loss? Can Eating Fat Make You Fat?

Eating fat does not automatically make you gain fat. Weight gain happens when you consistently consume more calories than your body uses, regardless of whether those calories come from fat, carbohydrates, or protein.

During weight loss, dietary fat is still an important part of a balanced diet. It supports hormone production, helps your body absorb certain vitamins, and can improve meal satisfaction. The goal is not to remove fat completely, but to include the right amount while staying within your calorie target.

GetFIT App helps you track your daily calories and macronutrients so you can find the right balance between protein, carbohydrates, and fats while working toward your goals.

## How Much Fat Should You Eat During Weight Loss?

The ideal fat intake depends on your total calorie target, body size, preferences, and overall diet.

A common recommendation is:

**20-35% of your daily calories from fat**

For example:

| Daily Calories | 20% Fat | 30% Fat | 35% Fat |
| -------------- | ------: | ------: | ------: |
| 1,600 kcal     | 36g fat | 53g fat | 62g fat |
| 2,000 kcal     | 44g fat | 67g fat | 78g fat |
| 2,500 kcal     | 56g fat | 83g fat | 97g fat |

Since fat contains **9 calories per gram**, small changes in fat intake can significantly affect your total daily calories.

## Can Eating Fat Make You Fat?

No. Eating fat does not directly cause fat gain.

Your body stores fat when you consistently consume more calories than you burn. This is called a calorie surplus.

For example:

| Situation                                          | Result             |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ------------------ |
| Eating 2,000 calories while burning 2,500 calories | Weight loss        |
| Eating 2,500 calories while burning 2,500 calories | Weight maintenance |
| Eating 3,000 calories while burning 2,500 calories | Weight gain        |

A person can lose weight while eating dietary fat, and a person can gain weight while eating a very low-fat diet. The deciding factor is total calorie balance.

## Why Do You Need Fat During Weight Loss?

Fat is not just a source of calories. Your body needs dietary fat for several important functions.

### Supporting Hormone Production

Dietary fats play a role in normal hormone production and overall health.

Very low-fat diets may make it harder to get enough essential fatty acids, which are important for normal body functions.

### Absorbing Fat-Soluble Vitamins

Some vitamins require fat for proper absorption.

These include:

* Vitamin A
* Vitamin D
* Vitamin E
* Vitamin K

Including healthy fat sources in your meals helps your body use these nutrients effectively.

### Improving Meal Satisfaction

Fat slows digestion and can make meals feel more satisfying.

For many people, a meal containing protein, carbohydrates, and some healthy fats feels more enjoyable and easier to maintain compared to a very low-fat diet.

This can make staying consistent with a calorie deficit much easier.

## Best Fat Sources During Weight Loss

Not all fat sources provide the same nutritional value. Choosing mostly minimally processed sources can help you build a healthier diet.

| Food          | Calories (per 100g) |  Fat | Protein | Carbs |
| ------------- | ------------------: | ---: | ------: | ----: |
| Olive oil     |            884 kcal | 100g |      0g |    0g |
| Avocado       |            160 kcal |  15g |      2g |    9g |
| Almonds       |            579 kcal |  50g |     21g |   22g |
| Walnuts       |            654 kcal |  65g |     15g |   14g |
| Whole eggs    |            143 kcal |  10g |     13g |    1g |
| Salmon        |            208 kcal |  13g |     20g |    0g |
| Peanut butter |            588 kcal |  50g |     25g |   20g |

These foods can all fit into a calorie deficit when portion sizes match your daily calorie goal.

## Should You Lower Fat or Carbs During Weight Loss?

There is no single correct answer.

Some people prefer a higher-fat diet because fats help them feel full and make meals more enjoyable. Others prefer eating more carbohydrates because they support training performance and energy levels.

The most important factors are:

* Staying within your calorie target
* Eating enough protein
* Choosing foods you can maintain long term

Your personal preference matters because the best diet is the one you can consistently follow.

## How GetFIT App Helps You Track Fat Intake

Keeping track of macronutrients can be confusing when done manually.

GetFIT App helps simplify the process by allowing you to monitor:

* Daily calories
* Protein intake
* Carbohydrate intake
* Fat intake
* Meal composition
* Long-term progress

When you log your meals, you can see whether your daily fat intake fits your calorie goal and make adjustments when needed.

A calorie deficit is what drives weight loss, but the way you build that deficit determines how easy it is to maintain. Fat is not something you need to fear. The right amount of dietary fat can support your health, improve satisfaction from meals, and help you stay consistent while losing weight.
