# What Is NEAT? How Daily Movement Affects Your Calorie Deficit

NEAT, or **Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis**, is the energy your body burns through everyday movement outside of structured exercise. Walking around the house, taking the stairs, standing while working, carrying groceries, and even cleaning all contribute to your daily calorie expenditure.

For many people, NEAT burns significantly more calories than formal workouts. To calculate your NEAT your can even [try our free calculator here!](https://www.joingetfitapp.com/fitness-calculators/free-neat-non-exercise-activity-thermogenesis-calculator)

## What Counts as NEAT?

NEAT includes almost every movement you make throughout the day that is not intentional exercise.

Examples include:

* Walking around at work
* Climbing stairs
* Shopping
* Cleaning your home
* Gardening
* Standing instead of sitting
* Walking your dog
* Carrying bags or boxes
* Playing with your children

Although these activities may seem small individually, they can add up to hundreds of calories over the course of a day.

## Why NEAT Is So Important

Two people with the same height, weight, and age can have very different calorie needs simply because one moves much more throughout the day.

Someone working on their feet may burn several hundred more calories than someone sitting at a desk for eight hours.

This is one of the main reasons activity level plays such an important role when estimating maintenance calories.

## How GetFIT App Estimates Your Daily Activity

When you create your account, GetFIT App asks a series of questions about your lifestyle and daily activity.

Your estimated maintenance calories are calculated using factors such as:

* Age
* Biological sex
* Height
* Body weight
* Daily activity level
* Exercise frequency

Your reported activity level helps estimate your NEAT and overall daily energy expenditure.

For example, someone with a physically demanding job will generally require more calories than someone who spends most of the day sitting.

## Don't Overestimate Your Activity

One of the most common mistakes people make is selecting an activity level that is higher than reality.

For example, training for one hour in the evening does not automatically mean you are "very active" if the remaining hours of your day are mostly spent sitting.

Choosing an activity level that is too high can cause your estimated maintenance calories to be inflated. This may result in eating more calories than intended and slowing your fat loss progress.

It is usually better to be honest and slightly conservative than to overestimate your daily movement.

## Your Activity Level Can Change

NEAT is not a fixed number.

Some weeks you may walk 12,000 steps every day. Other weeks you may only reach 5,000.

Busy work schedules, holidays, injuries, weather, and lifestyle changes can all influence your daily movement and overall calorie expenditure.

Reviewing your progress over time is much more effective than assuming your calorie needs never change.

## Track Your Progress Instead of Guessing

Estimating calorie needs is only the starting point. The most accurate way to know whether your calorie target is appropriate is by monitoring your long-term progress.

GetFIT App helps you do exactly that by allowing you to track your body weight, calorie intake, protein, meals, workouts, and daily activity in one place. If your weight trend matches your goal, your calorie target is likely close to where it should be. If not, you can make small adjustments based on real data instead of guesswork.

NEAT is often overlooked, but it is one of the biggest contributors to your daily calorie expenditure. Understanding your daily movement and estimating it realistically can make your calorie calculations much more accurate and help you build a calorie deficit that is easier to maintain.
