# Why Am I Not Losing Weight in a Calorie Deficit?

Many people believe they are in a calorie deficit but become frustrated when the scale refuses to move. In reality, fat loss always comes down to maintaining a calorie deficit over time. If your weight has not changed for several weeks, there is usually an explanation. The good news is that most of the common reasons are fixable once you identify them. (We will also show you how our web app, GetFIT App can help you with this issue.)

## You May Be Eating More Calories Than You Think

One of the most common reasons for stalled weight loss is underestimating calorie intake. Small extras like cooking oils, butter, sugary drinks, sauces, dressings, snacks, and even a handful of nuts can add hundreds of calories throughout the day.

Portion sizes are another common issue. Estimating instead of measuring often leads to consuming more food than expected.

  Using a kitchen scale and logging your meals accurately can make a significant difference, especially during the first few weeks of tracking.

## Be Honest With Your Food Logging & Tracking

When logging your meals, accuracy matters. Include everything you consume, even if it seems insignificant.

For example, log whether you used sugar, honey, or a zero-calorie sweetener. Record whether your food was cooked with butter, olive oil, or another fat source, and enter realistic portion sizes instead of guessing. These ingredients are calorie-dense, and consistently overlooking them can completely erase what you thought was a calorie deficit.

  GetFIT App makes this process easier by allowing you to track your meals, calories, and macros fast, and in one place, helping you build a much clearer picture of your actual daily intake.

## Weight Loss Is Not Always Linear

The number on the scale does not only reflect body fat. Your weight naturally changes from day to day because of water retention, carbohydrate intake, sodium, digestion, hormones, and even how much food is currently in your digestive system.

It is completely normal for your weight to remain the same, or even increase slightly, for several days despite being in a genuine calorie deficit.

<Note>
  Looking at weekly or monthly trends is much more useful than focusing on a single weigh-in.
</Note>

## Your Calorie Deficit May No Longer Be Large Enough

As you lose weight, your body generally requires fewer calories to maintain itself. A calorie target that produced steady fat loss a few months ago may gradually become closer to your new maintenance intake.

Reviewing your progress every few weeks and making small adjustments when necessary can help keep your results moving in the right direction.

## Stay Consistent Before Making Changes

Many people change their calories too quickly because they become discouraged after only a few days. Instead, try to stay consistent with your calorie target, protein intake, and activity level for at least two to three weeks before deciding whether adjustments are needed.

If your average weight is trending downward over time, even slowly, your plan is working.

A calorie deficit does work, but it also requires patience and consistency. By accurately tracking your food, measuring portions, and reviewing long-term trends instead of daily fluctuations, you can make informed adjustments and continue progressing toward your goals. <br /><br />Our platform, GetFIT App helps simplify the process by making it easy to log meals, monitor calories and macros, and stay consistent throughout your weight loss journey.
